A while ago, there was a topic discussing about Italian commercialized-packaged coffee like Lavazza and Illy. And they?re comparing the coffee to local roasted coffee like Red Birds. Surprisingly, the poster concluded that the Illy compares favorably and actually even beats the freshly roasted Red Bird. That?s a huge shock to me!

Good espresso should not be bitter, burnt or ashy. However, I seem to run across said espresso this week. After pulling numerous shots, drip, pour over and even a try at cupping, I can say without a shadow of doubt this coffee was a dud. It must have had a low quality Brazilian coffee in it that could not handle the darker roast that it was given.

It seems like it should have been bigger news in the coffee world, but somehow it slipped past with little mention. On March 12, Samuel Glazer, one of the partners who birthed a coffee revolution, passed away.
Glazer and his high school buddy Vincent Marotta had this crazy idea that American women would like an automatic drip coffeemaker in their kitchens. The pair hired an engineer to design the machine, talked Joe DiMaggio into pitching it to the public and the rest is history.
