My intention in writing this is not to scare you, but to inform you about this so you'll know what Dengue Fever is, and how you, as a visitor, can prevent it. So far, it appears that everything is still under control, and although there have been a handful of confirmed cases on Oahu, there have been none on Maui... but to keep it that way, it's important that everyone do their part - for us visitors, we can help by being diligent in preventing ourselves from becoming carriers of this virus, which means we have to prevent ourselves from getting bitten by infected mosquitoes - sooo, start wearing mosquito repellent on Maui please!
Have you recently traveled to an area other than Hawaii where Dengue Fever is present in the mosquito population? If so, you could be a carrier of the virus and not even know it yet! If this applies to you, it is doubly important for you to wear mosquito repellent so as to stop the potential spread of the virus from yourself to others via mosquitoes.
How is Dengue Fever spread? Dengue Fever is a virus that is spread by mosquitoes. It goes something like this: an infected mosquito bites a human. The human becomes a carrier for the virus. Another mosquito comes along and bites the human carrier. The new mosquito becomes a carrier and can pass it along to yet another human. Why should we care about Dengue Fever? For starters, it could make you very sick. And if you contract Dengue Fever once, it makes you more susceptible to getting a much more dangerous form of the virus later on.
Read more about Dengue Fever here on PubMed. (Link will open in new window.)
So how can you prevent yourself from catching this virus? First and foremost, be diligent about wearing mosquito repellent. If you're going into the jungle or other areas where there are likely to be mosquitoes, wearing long sleeves and long pants can help to prevent mosquito bites (but please note that while clothing can help lessen your risk of getting bitten, you can still get bitten
through clothing, so spraying your clothes with some mosquito repellent will be a good precaution to take.) Would I cancel my trip to Maui over this? As things are now, my answer would be no. I'd maybe think twice about heading into areas of the island where there are a lot of mosquitoes though... and I'd be dousing myself in mosquito repellent religiously!
If you're headed to Maui soon, have fun, don't freak out about this, and DO take appropriate precautions to prevent the spread of Dengue Fever! Another precaution you could take prior to departure for Maui is to visit your local travel health clinic to find out how Dengue Fever could impact you specifically.Source: http://www.paradise-found-in-maui.com/maui-blog.html#Dengue-Fever-on-Maui?
