Nov 29, A Cool Story about a Good Deed and a Restaurant on Maui

I came across this story in the Maui News, and I just HAD to tell someone... so, I decided to share it with all of YOU! (Link will open in new window.) There is this little restaurant called "A Saigon Cafe" in Wailuku who's owner has been doing an EXTRA special good deed every Thanksgiving for the past 16 years! Jennifer Nguyen keeps her restaurant closed on Thanksgiving Day, and uses the restaurant to prepare 65 Thanksgiving meals for the homeless on Maui. They pack up containers full of delicious turkey, potatoes, stuffing and other Thanksgiving fare (even dessert!) and then restaurant staff deliver the meals personally to areas such as parks and beaches where the homeless tend to congregate! I thought this was such an incredibly kind thing to do for someone! All this piqued my curiosity about the restaurant itself... Apparently it's a very casual Vietnamese restaurant, and not too fancy, but the food is supposed to be quite good, and very reasonably priced. One of the quirky things I found out about this place is that unlike EVERY other restaurant I've ever seen, they do NOT have a sign out front with the restaurant name. I've decided that I'd like to check out this restaurant for myself some day! If YOU would like to check it out, then here is the address: 1792 Main Street (between Central Avenue and Kaniela Street) in Wailuku. As always, if you go, we'd love to hear about it! Click here to share your story!

Coffee Berry Borer Meets Its Match in Fungus

For years the Coffee Berry Borer (CBB) has been plaguing Hawaiian coffee farmers. The Kona farmers had noticed that the dry years brought on the worst borer damage and now they know why. Turns out that a fungus has been lurking among the coffee trees and it spells bad news for the Berry Borer. So when the weather is wet, the fungus increased and the borer decreased. In short, the two seemed to neutralize each other.
