May 9, Great News! No Dengue Cases on Maui!

Whoo hoo! I was thrilled when I read this the other day - sorry it took me a while to post it for all of you to see though! State Health Department officials are so comfortable with the results of their dengue fever investigation that they've closed it down. Does this mean we can all start traipsing around in Maui's jungles with no mosquito repellant? Unfortunately no. There were still 5 confirmed cases on the nearby island of Oahu, so dengue is still out there. But I wouldn't stress out too much about this. If you go to areas where mosquitoes are often present, such as on a jungle hike, exploring along the Road to Hana etc., just spray on some mosquito repellent to protect yourself. As long as you don't get bitten by a mosquito, you can't catch Dengue Fever. And, worst case, if despite your best efforts, a mosquito bites you anyways, the good news is that Dengue Fever definitely does not appear to be running wild over all Maui! Not one single confirmed case on the entire island! So, odds are, as long as you take reasonable precautions, you won't run into any major problems!
